Submitting To Your Pastors

I first became aware of this video a while back...my cousin Krista recommended it to me strongly. I think it's one of her favorites. I think more than anything it demonstrates the kind of committment and faith in one's pastors that most pastors probably dream about. As you watch I just want you to ask yourself "Would I be willing to do this if my pastor asked?" The answer to that question could be very revealing.

Funny.........I watched this on youtube and the heading was "Cheesy Church"!

However, I don't get how the video goes with submitting to your pastors.........am I just clueless, or can you explain......please?

Lydia, I didn't think anyone would do something like this unless specifically asked to by one of their pastors. Perhaps it was one of their particularly cool and talented pastors who choreographed the whole thing as well...

Nah, I think these zombies think this is good, clean Christian entertainment. They probably WANTED TO DO IT!! I'm not sure I can be in heaven with this kind of horrifying behavior. That kind of stuff scares me. Rabid Religiosity run amuck! :P

Jamie, do I detect a bit of jealousy??? Can YOU do the moonwalk???

Let me put it this way: SHOOT ME FIRST!! PLEASE!

ok this is just terribly embarrassing to watch.

This looks to me like a seeker sensitive "special number" from the 80's or something. At that time I would've been a preteen and deeply steeped in religion. I think I would have been in awkward awe. :)

I am sure THEY are wishing that video was not on youtube. Good thing my home videos are safely on VHS.

You gotta admit-- they were precisely in step! I wonder how long they had to practice.

This is the kind of thing that makes me wretch at the Christian "entertainment/music" industry. All that effort and it's insipid. I think trying to be "creative" on one hand, and being fearful of displeasing God or the church on the other combine to produce dog doo.

Here's something for you to ponder Jul: would understanding grace make one more freely creative?

I see.........

I agree with Jamie, they looked like they were WAY into it and how else would that guy be able to show off his moves..........no they had to be more than willing.....I am seriously hoping it was meant to be a joke kind of thing...............maybe?

Sorry to intrude but KNOWING Grace should make one more free in every area. Life more ABUNDANT.

SLW needs to check out Lydia's and Ursula's beautiful poetry. :)

Jul, we KNOW one area where you got more free. LOL. :P

absolutely hilariously pathetically sad!

my oh my - I told my husband that that is what he would be doing right now if he hadn't been delivered from christian tryism. . .

Oh gyah...I haven't viewed the video yet, and now i don't think I can stomach it.

I just dropped in on you, Jul, to let you know that I don't check my 'blogroll' often, and when I do, I don't always realize who is there and who isn't...so I JUST NOW put you there.

:-)

Not that it will make your day or change your life...but hey, it is a LINK from my heart to yours...

Now. (breathing deeply) To watch this pathetic little piece of wretched Christendom...

oh....my....

Tim and I just stood here, before the laptop, and were beyond any words. We could not conceive of, nor absorb, what we had seen with our own eyes.

I'm married to "the pastor", and I'd refuse. Flat. Out. Refuse. To do anything remotely AKIN to this.

I'd walk through a bonfire holding a can of Aqua Net in EACH HAND before I'd do this.

I guess this was considered cool at one time...maybe.

"Look, everyone! Christians can have fun and dance, too!"

I'm so embarrassed. :-)

Retch. We do that you know. I think these precious people bound up in chains...may just have coreographed THAT themselves. I would not do that...for ANYONE!!! Just not happening people! That was humiliating just to watch. No wonder the church has the reputation it has!!!

Jul, I meant to tell you yesterday that Tim could not resist putting "Cheesy Church" on HIS blog - a blog about the brief conversation we had, after seeing the video here, at your place.

We talked about how silly Christians can be, when reaching for "relevance". There is something about a Christian who can "just be"...without trying to be ANYTHING...without trying to be holy or relevant or righteous. Those Christians are the very ones who end up being the most creative, the most cutting edge, the most winsome, the most loving.

Anyhow. Just wanted to let you know that "cheesy church" is taking over blogdom. ACK!

I think the suit, dresses, backdrop and the two mafiosa looking keyboardists is what makes it so chessy... if they were all 20yrs younger, would probably quite hip....The words of the song are pretty cool though...

I apologize Julie for taking up your space for conversation but I found Sheila's comment so intriguing:

"There is something about a Christian who can "just be"...without trying to be ANYTHING...without trying to be holy or relevant or righteous. Those Christians are the very ones who end up being the most creative, the most cutting edge, the most winsome, the most loving."

hmmm so there is hope for me yet? ;) I am so hungry to learn how to just BE , not yet comfortable in my own skin to tell the truth. Thanks for the thoughts.

At first I thought it was some intentionally cheesy video to get a point across, but then I realized they were serious. And then I cringed.

Where did this video come from? I don't really get why it has anything to do with submitting to your pastors. Sure, it's lame, but they obviously thought it was cool so why make fun of them? Just because we would never do something like that doesn't mean other people find it entertaining. Plus, there's nothing biblically wrong with it.

The video looks old, too. Back in the eighties, early nineties, this was the thing to do!

Cirra, I'm totally with you on the 'being' thing. That's the scary part of this video, I can relate in a way. I find myself talking to unbelievers sometimes and I realize I'm trying to be cool or some other stupid thing. It's when I'm just being myself that they are attracted to Jesus in me. People are longing for us to be authentic, to be confident and secure in Jesus, to be sure that we are saved, to be truly and unconsciously happy.

And SLW, yes, the more established we become in grace the more creative we'll be. We won't be trying to clean up something the world is doing to make it 'holy' enough for church, or to try and impress the world with our coolness, the world will look in on us and be deeply moved by what we're doing, cuz what we're doing will be an expression of amazing passion and it will be relevant to their deepest longings.

Janelle, I found the video on youtube, I think it's also posted on GodTube. I don't know how old it is but probably not as old as the 80's, just guessing. I totally understand if you don't get my sense of humor, it happens all the time. I blame it on being Canadian but there may be other reasons...anyway, they put the video out there themselves so it's free game. I agree with Craig that the words weren't half bad, however, the whole thing comes off as ridiculous. I think it's because these people are so obviously not of the hip-hop crowd naturally. It seems fake in other words. And I think we can all learn something valuable from it and perhaps realize how unattractive religious nonsense is. I still don't feel bad for posting it, not one single ounce of shame. Sorry.
